Film is definitely, not dead and there are still factories churning it out in addition to Kodak although my favourite ( Fuji) have ceased production although there are plenty of rolls still in stock. I have noticed that the price of film is starting to climb making it impractical for those on a tight budget, also film labs are now getting sparse. Mind you, editing software is so good these days that it?s hard to tell the difference between digital and film. Film of course is better for archiving. The new HDR Cintel II does not have a wet gate, and most scanners do not. The Northlight does not, Lasergraphics no, and even boutique high-end archival scanners like the Kinetta don't either to my knowledge. And with the digital tools available today you really don't need the hazardous, environmentally contaminating chemicals laying around. I personally won't touch any client's negative except to thread it through the transport and rewind it at the end of scanning, unless I need to add head/tail leader that is. I plan to take videos of this process to ensure you can see what I do and know that any defects were not caused by my setup. After you get the scan back, Davinci and other specialized plugins can handle any dust and scratches and the color correction tools are amazing. I plan to upload some examples in the near future. The nice thing about the Cintel is that it integrates seamlessly with Davinci via a solid, non-proprietary codec. If this workflow does not produce good results, I will adjust and evolve. We just started up so maybe in the future we could forge some alliances. The scanning biz, like everything else in the film industry, is pretty cutthroat. The primary lab I worked with for my feature in Seattle is long gone, unfortunately. Fotokem I've sent negative to before, not too far away relatively speaking. If there were labs without scanning on hand I'd reckon those would be most receptive to what I'm trying to do. What I'm trying to do is contribute to the indy FILM world with a little relief while making my own films. Film and storage can be expensive. Anything 'movie-production-related' is a zillion dollars over what you could make on your own with a little craft and elbow grease. In this case the reduced cost of scans could put a production back in the black for 35/16. So I'll share and make a humble ROI in the process. The Cintel is a formidable machine; paired with Davinci it's a powerhouse combo. Sad truth is that people are unstable, bad things and hardships come and some folks aren't build for it.? I guess it was too much temptation form for old Sergey. hi did simillar things in past but he allways made it right. this time i think he is off the deep end and we wont see him back. at lest as Sergey :) its sucks as i know several folks with 10k+ of goods in Sergeys deadlock. i guess i am lucky. it sucks!
