Lower resolution is better than no means of projection or transfer to digital distribution, and the newer emulsions are finer grain than the old stock so they appear to be higher resolution.

Super8 footage can be cropped into a 14x9 without much loss (much like most older TV shows have been cropped to fit onto a 16x9 TV screen without much notice of the black bars on the sides), but it still means less resolution...
