[Konvas] Konvas. Weddings etc

Rita,

4000 GBP! My crew and I were a bargain. I will eventually post a
sampling of our wedding footage. Beautiful setting with an inner
courtyard, oak trees and a pond with running water. We were also only
a two cam setup but with much smaller distances. One of my Italian
operators was a wired and very fit (bicycling/climbing)
cinematographer who managed to maintain a very enthusiastic, manic
energy for 8.5 hours straight! In contrast to the second bored and
sitting operator constantly checking his Facebook messages. What a
contrast. Next time I will operate in conjunction with my Italian
colleague. Expensive lesson. I am so use to simple run and gun motion
picture camera operation that I tend to find digital cams invariably
"picky" and fragile. And waaaay too many options. But Marco managed to
operate in an almost digital lock and run mode. Quite impressive.

All handheld footage was stabilized with Glidecams. They only they we
drank was water. Ok. One sip of white wine for me but I do not tend to
drink on principal and it was out of respect for toasting the bride
and groom who happen to be both my friends.

When I returned the rented Sony A7s , the owner of the rental
facility, Joe Sutherland, showed me his entire operational motion
picture collection ranging form Eclair ACL II, Eclair NPR, MItchell
35mm NC w/ crank, Mitchell BNCR (Stanley Kubrick version), Cinema
Products BNCR version also known as the XR35, BACH Auricon 16mm, etc.
He had an operational Auricon analog double LP "live" recording disc
setup. He explained how the varying exposure rate "look" was achieved
with handcranked 35mm cameras - magnesium flares! I was blown away.
Very dangerous and prone to fires. He stated he could rent me the
Mitchell NC or BNCR cheap if need me.

Not enough hours in a week....

I went to my niece's wedding recently and was shocked as to the money she paid out not just for the wedding etc but for the videoing. Her video was not great and she had to pay £4,000 for an afternoon and evening shooting. The wedding was a grand affair which took place in an old mansion so photo opportunities were many but had to do a lot of leg work to cover the grounds. It was only a two camera set up so they had to be everywhere at once. The husband and wife "crew" were running as fast as they could run so camera set ups were poorly positioned IMO and due to a lack of time had to be handheld so the images were shaky and looked rushed! They should have had four camera's to cover the ten acre site so many opportunities were missed.

Also applying champagne to the camera crew was a mistake on my niece's part especially half way through the day. I take my hat off to anyone who can do a good wedding video as its really hard work.

Other Russian optic makes also have their own mix but not always as attractive. I have a number of Ross London binoculars WW11 vintage and as leather was restricted during that period they attempted to copy leather grain using paint. I have downloaded a photo of this but I cannot reduce the size of it so it may not transfer. Arriflex, Aaton, Mitchell etc all finished their cameras in their own brand of paint. The paint finish certainly enhances the attractiveness of the item which is one of the reasons other than optical perfection that Zeiss sold so many binoculars. They chose a tiny dimple finish which is non reflective but is extremely hard wearing due the dimple surface. In fact every pair of binoculars I have have different paint surfaces even though some of them are identical from the same production line.
