It was erected 1898, rebuilt 1906-- which is why the buildings on the road all look new.

The plaque on the building at the end of the film states "erected 1898", eight years before the earthquake. I think we are talking about different films.

The projection halls before the earthquake were purpose built, and they were in operation during 1906 until the earthquake, and he put together a "return to normal" tent show. The more important buildings, like hospitals, warehouses, apartments and houses, they were rebuilt first, so it went from a lot of movies to a big tent-- but a tent alive with the city's heart.

> Yes, you are quite right there were theatres showing films. It should have read "purpose built" cinema's. The plaque on the building at the end is too hazy for me to read and the credits on the film just says 3,000 deaths in the city. No mention of who financed it.

ONE projector was salvaged and put in a big tent and was back in operation immediately and San Francisco gave a special award to Sid Grauman for helping spur the rebuilding of the city.
