This kind of plastic with the curve on the edge let the chemical free to
developing the film emulsion.It's also not let the film back get in contact
with the emulsion side of the film.
The only bad thing it's increase the room need to developing your film !

The Morse G 3  developing thank the film touch the back of the film you
have no space this why you need too turn the film to the end and then
reverse the direction so the film move all the time to not made contact and
get processed by fresh solution.

Lomo got a nice thank made with a plastic reel with a grove slot in it to
keep the film with a space for chemical ( expensive but one of the best )
some have multi reel and a motor.
